Description: Bill Burke, who was honored as a Mastersmith June 2006, makes knives that are as high performance as a knife can get. He is best known for his sheep horn hunting knives and chef's knives, though he has been finding tremendous inspiration in his slip joint folders over the past couple years. Recently he spent some time with renowned slip joint folder maker Bill Ruple and this has brought his slip joints to a new level. This Three Blade Sowbelly Trapper shows Mastersmith Bill Burke's skill and accomplishments at their best.
Burke included three blades on this Sowbelly: a short (2 inch) and a long clip point (2-3/4 inch) and a sheepsfoot (2 inch). For centuries, clip point blades have been the main blade in more knives than not. A clip point provides a strong, yet detail-oriented tip and is a perfect choice for a wide variety of tasks. The sheepsfoot blade provides a thin blade that provides a supremely clean cut, especially on flat cutting surfaces. The blades on this Trapper are formed from stainless damascus hand forged by Burke. Very few makers create their own stainless damascus -- it is an extremely daunting task and shows a tremendous understanding of metallurgy. Bill combined AEB-L and 304 stainless steels. The high contrast, low care stainless damascus blade is immediately captivating and shows Mastersmith Bill Burke's skill in the forge.
Presentation grade bark mammoth ivory scales are perfectly fit to the 416 stainless steel front and rear bolsters. Dark chocolate veins travel across a caramel background. The colors in this bark ivory are the result of mineral deposits transferring into the ivory across thousands of years. The left scale features an inlaid stainless steel escutcheon.
The action is smooth and the blades perfectly centered. Each blade has a firm half stop and is very well timed.
Excellent fit and finish throughout!
