Description: Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he is now the artist in residence at Appalachian Center for Crafts. Given the skill shown in this enticing utility knife, he is clearly on my list of makers to watch! This knife was made while Andrew was a journeyman smith. It has been on display in our gallery as an example of Andrew's work at its best.
The long, slender damascus blade is a multi-bar Gordian Knot pattern -- one of the hardest and most dramatic damascus patterns done today. It is a four bar composite which began with 1095 and L6 carbon steels. The damascus shows both his skills at the grinder and at the forge. The steel clearly shows the influence of Mastersmith JD Smith, who is well known for his skills at creating damascus. The spine is fluted for a particularly elegant appearance.
The African blackwood handle and stainless bolster are set fileworked stainless steel liners, which in turn surround the distal tapered, fileworked full tang. The distal tapered full tang and blade ensure a perfect balance.
Exceptional work throughout!
