Description: John Doyle makes an amazing Bowie. The proportions, design, and implementation are all top notch.
The 8-1/2 inch blade was forged to shape from W2 carbon steel. John borrowed a technique from Japanese swords when he created this knife. A differential heat treatment line (called a hamon), shows the transition between the soft, supportive spine and the hard steel required for the keen, long lasting edge. A hand rubbed satin finish lends an heirloom quality.
The handle is formed from a particularly beautiful piece of wood -- the presentation grade koa has a very tight curl and shows off chatoyancy -- the appearance of the pattern changing as the handle is turned in the light. John used stabilized wood to ensure it will hold up well across time. The handle swells as it moves away from the bolster, moves into a slimmer waist, and swells again as it reaches the butt. This is a knife you won't want to put down.
The guard and ferrule are both formed from Doyle's own damascus. He combined 15N20 and 1084 carbon steels in a high contrast accent. Two thin spacer formed from copper bring in warm tones.
This bowie is accompanied by a hand tooled, hand stitched, custom leather sheath by C Scott in Walla Walla, Washington.
Exceptional work throughout!
