Description: This is a beautiful example of Tom's "knapped steel" style. Tom has produced a unique synthesis of two ancient arts - knifemaking and sculpture. This creation has a stunning amount of detail, beginning with the knapped steel dagger. The carbon steel is forged, carved and engraved to resemble a flint knapped knife, complete with percussion marks. By hot bluing the steel, Tom gives it an obsidian-like appearance.
Engraved 410 stainless steel scales surround the carbon steel tang. The scales are set with hammered copper pins. One side of the handle depicts the Norse goddess Hel. Odin is portrayed on the reverse. Hel was the goddess of the underworld. She is commonly depicted as half beautiful woman, half corpse. Those who died valiantly in battle went to Valhalla, ruled by Odin. Those who died of natural causes went to the underworld, ruled by Hel. Both deities are engraved with very lifelike appearances. Odin's helm is inlaid with 24kt gold, as is the hem of Hel's vale. Hel's dead eye is inlaid with moose antler.
This dagger is accompanied by a walnut display/storage box. True to form, this piece is a fascinating fusion of ancient cultures - with a touch of the whimsy we expect from Tom!
