Description: Jonny Walker Nilsson is one the true masters of the Sami styled knife. His work has been recognized for its innovations while working within this very traditional medium. Mattias Styrefors is one of the true masters of Damascus steel. Since 2006, Jonny and Mattias, long time friends, began working together and sharing their arts. The results are exceptional!
The damascus blade was forged to shape by Mattias. It uses the san mai technique -- a central core of 20C carbon steel is surrounded by a thick nickel layer, and then laddered damascus. The combination of patterns is quite captivating.
The stacked handle begins with a cross cut section of ancient walrus ivory. The ivory contains very rare jet black sections with the tapioca core. Layers of Arizona desert ironwood surround a central cross-cut section of mammoth ivory. The handle is completed with buffalo horn and ancient walrus ivory.
The right side of the handle is engraved in a traditional Sami motif (the pattern is not scrimshaw, it is hand engraving darkened with pine bark powder) by Jonny. Jonny's work is particularly detailed and shows his skill at its best. A section of heat blued damascus is visible through a reveal.
The knife is accompanied by a traditional Swedish leather pouch style sheath. It has been hand tooled and features a domed circle of basket weave damascus. Reindeer antler is engraved in traditional Sami style. Exceptional work throughout!
