Description: Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he has been a part-time knifemaker and hopes to go full time. Given the skill shown in this exceptional folder, it seems impossible that he would not succeed!
A unique knife at very first sight, the slim handle is made from textured stainless steel. The pivot is created from Andrew's own damascus steel. The stainless steel scales are set on 308 stainless steel liners, which in turn surround the textured backbar.
The blade shows off tremendous skill at the forge. Andrew combined 1095 and L6 carbon steels into a beautiful, highly controlled ladder pattern. The blade is easily opened using the forge welded cable thumb stud.
Perhaps the highlight of this piece, and the reason behind its name, are the inlays into the handle. Two views of a heron's skull are inlaid into silver into the scales. Both skulls are meticulously carved in 3 dimensions. One side features the skull viewed from above, while the other is a side view. At the end of the handle, a compartment is revealed by pivoting the cover. Revealed underneath is a carved heron feather, floating in water. Both the feather and dark water were carved from Shakudo, a traditional Japanese alloy combining 4% gold with 95% copper.
This is an amazing work of art and tremendously inspiring! Words cannot do this knife justice.
