Description: This Miseretto is a cross between a medieval misericord (a mercy weapon for delivery the final merciful stroke) and an Italian stiletto with a bit of Japanese kozuka thrown in for good measure. It is immediately captivating -- hand forged, filed, engraved, and carved from 1080 carbon steel with engraved Shibuichi scales inlaid with 24k gold and silver pins.
Shibuichi means "one-fourth" in Japanese and indicates the standard formulation of one part silver to four parts copper. Until Japan's Meiji reforms (late 19th century), when swordsmiths began to make purely decorative objects instead of swords, shibuichi was used to ornament various fittings for katana.
The Shibuichi is meticulously carved to show the knots and bark on a log. 24k gold ants are inlaid into the surface. The reverse scale shows a detailed millipede crawling beneath the rotting bark.
The knife is accompanied by a walnut and boxwood presentation stand. Exceptional work throughout!
