Description: DJ Urbanovsky is the owner and sole employee of American Kami. The company name comes from his respect and appreciation of Nepali knifemakers known as "Kami". Despite the "pretty and shiny" finish on his work, DJ hand builds all of his knives to survive use and his own playfully admitted clumsiness. "If there's ever a problem with something I've made, I'll make it right!", sums up his warranty.
The Riot Spear project was brought to life by American Kami, with the design intent being a close-quarters edged tool that could be rapidly accelerated through the use of fulcrum techniques to aggressively cut through everything from soft-tissue to foliage. The 26 1/3 inch overall length gives plenty of reach for the user to really "reach out and touch" any intended target. 8 3/4 inches of differentially heat-treated 1095 carbon steel is given a hollow chisel grind and features a satin finish. The ergonomic G10 handle is comfortable to hold its entire length due to DJ rounding all sharp angles. The non-slip pattern carved into the handle and smartly placed bends and swells provide excellent grip retention and provides indexing points for the user to gauge the range of the blade when swung. The blade is counter-balanced by a pommel that is rounded for comfort when thrusting and is perfect for focused impact strikes.
A quite brutal tool reminiscent of everything from a Japanese Nagamaki to the Zulu Iklwa, the Riot Spear can be swung like an axe, thrust with precision, or used as a knife. The versatility of this piece is only limited by the user's knowledge and skill set, making a perfect tool for both beginners and expert practitioners of primitive skills, fighting arts, or bush crafting.
