Description: Michael Rader was honored as a Journeyman Smith in June 2006 and a Master Smith in June 2010. He has a style all of his own, combining an aesthetic drawn from Medieval and Far East influences with his own vision. He is a master of the integral guard. This elegant integral bowie was made by Michael just before he became a journeyman smith. It has been in a single private collection and is in new condition.
The blade and integral bolster were forged to shape from 5160 round bar. A hand rubbed satin finish lends an heirloom quality to the long recurve blade.
The bolster is integral -- a technique that, while common in production knives, is very rare in handmade knives due to the difficulty of implementation. The resulting knife is extremely durable and dramatic. The handle is combines redwood burl with maple burl accents. The woods are meticulously combined in complex arches -- with the seams nearly beyond perception. By using stabilized woods, Michael is able to combine the beauty of natural wood with durability. The knife has perfect balance and feels exceptional in the hand.
Exceptional work throughout.
