Description: Tom Sterling's work is exceptional -- showing off his tremendous sense of design and skill in implementation.
This American frontier knife, with its rugged hand-forged blade and carefully crafted handle, embodies a raw elegance that speaks to the spirit of American adventure and resilience. Tom crafted this knife completely by hand. It has been kept in a private collection since it was made in 2008. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Sterling could have made it yesterday!
The blade is hand forged 1080 carbon steel to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The blade was shaped using hand files just like it would have been done in the American frontier. The flats reveal hammer marks from hand forging to shape. The blade is convex and razor sharp. A Spanish notch makes resharpening the knife a breeze.
Desert ironwood handle scales are set on the full tang. Desert ironwood (Olneya tesota) is a rare wood that is only found in the valleys of the Sonoran Desert below 2,500 foot elevation. It is extremely dense and durable. In fact, it is so dense that if a piece is dropped in water it will sink! A rawhide wrap completes the handle.
The knife is accompanied by a frontier style rawhide sheath with copper medicine wheel ornamentation.
Exceptional work throughout!
