Description: Jerry McClure was immediately captivated by the Inuit fire starter artifact. In 1800s Alaska, many fossil walrus ivory pieces were used as tools, ranging from fishing weights to sled runners, to fire starters. This handle, a fire starter used by the Inuit people, is one such piece. The "bowl" formed at the back of the handle was formed from the friction of two sections of fossil ivory that were rubbed together. Colors in the fossil ivory range from rich cream to deep caramel. Jerry has retained the shape as much as possible. Inspired by the linear pattern in the ivory, Jerry forged a linear pattern damascus for the blade. By forging 15N20 and 1095 carbon steels, Jerry assures a keen, long lasting edge. The blade enters the damascus guard without discernable seam. Jerry combined fossil oosik copper berylium spacers with the artifact to complete the handle. The knife is accompanied by a presentation sheath made by Larry Parsons. Exceptional fit and finish throughout!
