Description: To my eye, this is exactly the sort of knife the American Bladesmith Society hopes to have its members create. Gary works with very tight tolerances, creating a knife with an excellent fit and finish.
The satin finished blade is perfectly executed and cleanly forged. Gary used a traditional Japanese heat treating technique whereby the spine is covered in clay during heat treatment. This results in a soft, supportive spine with an ultra-hard, long lasting cutting edge. The resulting heat treatment line is dramatic and exceptional. By choosing steels such as 1095 carbon steel, Gary shows a dedication to producing knives which can stand up to use and will hold their edge.
With Sambar stag becoming harder to get, excellent examples of it are a very rare find. The sambar stag has been mortised over a substantial tang, so as to create a very strong, resilient knife. Nickel silver pins complete the handle.
It is no surprise that this knife won Best Hand Forged at the 2006 Montana Knifemakers Association Show
