Description: A nomadic people of Northern China, the Mongolian’s utensils were practical and hardy, many of which are still handmade today. This kit, inspired by the travelling Mongolian Trusse sets, comes with an elegant knife, a set of mammoth ivory and ironwood chopsticks, and a matching skewer for the spearing of pickled items. The set also boasts a toothpick and ear-spoon fashioned from mammoth ivory. A fantastic Mongolian feast accessory with excellent fit and finish throughout.
Mastersmith Christoph Deringer creates knives that have a timelessness about them that is not found anywhere. His work is entirely done by hand, without the use of grinders, buffers, or other machinery. Christoph is one of the few makers that specializes in fully integral knives -- from blade to bolster and (in this case) sideways tang. This is only possible because his work is accomplished by hand beginning by forging and then using files instead of resorting to a motorized grinder. This technique, which is extremely difficult to do by hand (and virtually impossible on a grinder), is done to perfection on this integral picnic utility knife.
The integral blade was forged from one piece of 1095 high carbon steel in a coal fire. The sideways tang sits between copper liners and dramatic desert ironwood scales. The blade fits securely in the precision fit, mammoth-throated, desert ironwood sheath and is the center piece of this Mongolian inspired dining set.
Exceptional work throughout!
