Description: The Pressure Valve Dive Knife is a collaboration between Mastersmith Tommy Gann and BladeGallery manager Jeff Swanson to create the highest performing dive knife on the market, packed full of features needed for a mission-critical environment.
Dive knives are purpose-built to help divers cut themselves free from entanglements like fishing line, nets, kelp, or rope, and to perform emergency tasks underwater where visibility, dexterity, and time are limited. A good dive knife must be corrosion-resistant in saltwater, easy to access with gloved hands, and capable of controlled cutting without endangering the diver or damaging gear—requirements that make designing one surprisingly complex. Makers must balance edge retention against rust resistance, engineer secure, yet quickly deployable sheaths (that also don't break down with salt water), and shape handles that remain slip-resistant under pressure and in cold water. Even blade geometry is critical: too thick and it won’t slice cleanly; too thin and it risks flexing or snapping. Every detail—from fastener materials to grind style—has to survive one of the harshest environments a knife will ever face.
The blade is hand ground by Mastersmith Tommy Gann from CPM-MagnaCut stainless steel. CPM-MagnaCut is an ultra-premium stainless steel created by Crucible with the help of professional metallurgist Dr. Larrin Thomas. MagnaCut combines the high toughness of CPM-4V with the corrosion resistance of CPM-20CV. This creates a perfect blade steel option for knives that need high toughness and great edge retention while still being easy to maintain. The steel was cryo-treated to bring out the maximum potential of MagnaCut. The blade is chisel-ground for a razor sharp cutting edge. The front bevel is unsharpened for extra toughness for tasks like scraping barnacles off the bottom of the boat, opening shells, gently prying items from sediment on the sea floor while exploring, or loosening jammed components of your gear. The sawback is perfect for sawing tougher-to-cut materials such as thick rope or other abrasion-resistant materials. The line cutter is perfect for cutting through fishing line and other things that might trap a diver while underwater. Tommy Gann's touchmark is on the left side of the blade. Jeff Swanson's touchmark is on the right side of the blade.
The handle is hand contoured black Micarta. Micarta holds up exceptionally well to the harsh demands of salt water. The scales are fastened with titanium screws to ensure the hardware doesn't rust. A deep choil and aggressive jimping allow the knife to be indexed easily even while wearing gloves. A guard locks your hand in place and prevents it from sliding forward toward the blade. The distal tapered tang lightens overall weight and creates a nice balance in hand.
Hand turned aluminum rods are included which fit into the rear lanyard hole. They lock in place with O-rings. This aluminum rod acts as a sacrificial anode. A sacrificial aluminum anode works by using basic electrochemistry to protect metal parts—like steel hulls, outdrives, plumbing, or, in this case, your knife—from corrosion. Aluminum is more electrically active than steel, so when both are in water and connected, the aluminum “sacrifices” itself by corroding first. This controlled corrosion draws the destructive electrochemical reactions away from the protected metal, dramatically slowing rust and pitting. As the anode gradually dissolves, it must be replaced periodically to maintain protection. Extra aluminum rods are included for this reason.
A 3D printed TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) sheath blends modern manufacturing with real-world performance, offering a durable, flexible, and lightweight alternative to traditional sheath materials. TPU’s rubber-like properties provide impact-resistance and a secure, friction fit on the knife that resists scratching the blade. The material is waterproof, corrosion-proof, and resistant to temperature swings, making it ideal for outdoor, marine, and everyday carry. Because the sheath is formed from one piece, there are no screws or attachment sections that will fail from corrosion. The result is a sheath that’s tough, quiet in use, and engineered for reliability. Rubber dive straps made in Italy are included to strap the knife to your leg, arm, or a piece of gear.
Excellent work throughout!
