Description: Aaron Wilburn became a journeyman smith in June of 2009 and a master smith in 2013. He has incredible control over damascus that few others can replicate. Aaron creates serious knives for some of the most avid collectors and this hunter is a tremendous example of his work!
The blade is hand forged 52100 carbon steel. Many makers and collectors feel that this is the best steel available anywhere for use as a knife blade. The blade was differentially heat treated, bringing the edge to critical temperature then quenched with oil. This technique, involving low temperature forging, a multiple quench and multiple temper creates some of the sharpest and most long-lasting edges found anywhere. Many thermal cycles and normalizing steps ensure consistent grain structure and exceptional durability. A cryogenic treatment between tempers enhances edge holding ability. A forge finish remains on the flats and an antiqued finish is incorporated in the grinds. Wilburn's touchmark is on the left side of the blade. His M.S. mark and serial #896 is on the right side.
The blade moves seamlessly into an integral bolster. This technique has superior structural integrity and requires a particularly talented smith. Because the blade and bolster are made from a solid piece, it makes the knife substantially more resilient to breakage.
The handle is a downturned section of Sambar stag. The natural texture of the antler provides a comfortable, slip-resistant grip. The pommel is ancient mammoth ivory, hand carved to match the natural texture of the stag. A hand hammered copper rivet sets it in place.
To keep the knife close at hand, a pouch style leather custom sheath made by Aaron is included.
Excellent work throughout!
