Description: Meeting with Journeyman Stuart Smith is a real highlight of my trips to South Africa. Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quit his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became an ABS journeyman smith in June of 2019.
This is a brand new model from Stuart called the San Francisco EDC. The spear point blade was inspired by the work of San Francisco knifemaker Michael Price. Knives by Price such as the San Francisco Bowie were the height of knifemaking in 1890s California. This golden age of American knifemakers created some of the most dramatic and elegant knives of our land.
The 3.8 inch blade is hand forged 52100 carbon steel -- a steel that many knifemakers and collectors feel to have the highest performance found anywhere. It features an heirloom quality hand rubbed satin finish. Stuart's touchmark is on the right side of the blade. His J.S. mark is on the left side of the blade. The spine of the blade is engraved "San Francisco Prototype 1", signifying this is the first prototype of the new model. Because the blade is forged from carbon steel, we recommend using camellia oil to protect the blade and natural wood handle.
Handle scales are Arizona desert ironwood set on a full tang using hand domed brass pins. The contoured handle provides a comfortable grip. The tang is distal tapered to create a nice balance in hand.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand tooled leather custom sheath made by Stuart's wife Michelle is included. A black clip allows it to be worn in the pocket or on the belt.
Excellent work throughout!
