Description: Kershaw’s founder, Pete Kershaw, knew the importance of guaranteed quality – as an outdoorsman, he often used knives for hunting and fishing. In late 1974, he decided to start his own knife company at a cement plant in Lake Oswego, Oregon. On the other side of the world, Kai had been crafting bladed tools for over 65 years and was known for its quality. Then-president Saijiro Endo II was focused on exporting Kai products to other countries, including the American market. Kershaw and Kai’s paths converged, and the two have been linked since.
The Kershaw Eris (1881) is named after the troublemaker of the Greek pantheon, Eris. Despite its namesake, this knife means business. The stainless steel handle gives a pleasing weight in your hand and makes up the basis for the strong frame lock mechanism. The handle has a titanium carbo-nitride coating to help resist scratching and wear and gives a smoother feeling. The blade opens quickly and easily with Kershaw’s assisted mechanism by pulling down on the flipper tab. The pocket clip may be mounted for left or right side, tip-up carry. A cut-out near the rear of the handle allows for easy attachment of lanyards or fobs.
The 8Cr13MoV stainless steel blade is satin finished in the flats and stonewashed in the grinds. The name of the steel simply refers to the elements it contains: .8% Carbon, 13% chromium and small additions of molybdenum and vanadium. It is most similar to AUS-8. The drop point blade is a great general-purpose shape. A swedge along the spine of the blade gives a stronger tip and better balance. Jimping along the spine provides excellent purchase.
Kershaw Knives carry a lifetime warranty from the manufacturer. Some services are free like sharpening, body screws and pocket clips, and some services like blade replacements are available for a fee. Further information can be found on Kershaw’s website.
