Description: Chris Reeve Knives are some of the finest semi-production knives made. From fixed blades to folding knives, these are heirloom items that will be used and passed down for many generations.
The Umnumzaan translates to “the Boss” in Zulu, and this knife is certainly deserving of the title. The knife was developed from the 20+ year heritage of the Sebenza and won the 2008 BLADE Show Award - Overall Knife of the Year. Refined design and high-performance construction are evident in every detail. The handle uses two thick bars of titanium with a sand blasted finish. Chris Reeve pioneered a very strong integrated locking mechanism wherein a ceramic ball creates the interface between the surface of the integral locking arm and the blade locking surface. The ball doubles to drop into a detent on the blade to ensure the blade does not open accidentally when carried. Both handles have a milled checkerboard pattern to enhance grip. The locking side features an over-travel stop that is machined with the “CRK” logo. The titanium pocket clip is mounted for right side, tip-up carry. The pivot screw and pin are supported by large thrust washers. These perforated phosphor-bronze washers reduce friction and retain the fluorinated grease for longer lubrication, resulting in a knife with a considerably longer lifespan. The thumb lug doubles as the stop pin, ensuring a solid lockup. Around the lug is a polyurethane O-ring that acts as a shock absorber to cushion the impact of the lug against the handle. Never wishing to copy other designs without giving credit, Chris Reeve Knives acknowledges Grant and Gavin Hawk as the origin of the shock-absorber concept in one of their many innovative designs. CRK appreciates Grant and Gavin’s consent to use this adaptation of their concept.
The 3.7 inch blade is crafted from CPM-MagnaCut stainless steel (63-64 Hrc) with a stonewash finish. CPM-MagnaCut is a super-steel designed by professional metallurgist Larrin Thomas and executed by Crucible Industries. An exacting chemical makeup gives MagnaCut an incredible balance of properties. As tough and durable as the strongest tool steels and as corrosion resistant as the best stainless steels, MagnaCut is the perfect choice in almost any knife shape or size. A stonewash finish helps hide scratching that appears with use. The blade features a modified harpoon blade shape with an aggressive swedge. Hollow ground sides provide a strong, thick spine while being thin behind the edge for effortless cutting performance. The tang of the blade extends past the handle when the blade is closed, making an effective glass breaker.
