Description: When I recently visited Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey, I was very pleased to see they had some of their knives available. Kevin and Heather teach bladesmithing courses, with students travelling from all over the world to learn their techniques. Kevin uses the Heavin Forge mark on his knives when he creates a knife while demonstrating for his classes. This is one such knife.
Horace Kephart is considered by many to be the Godfather of American woodcraft and is best known as the author of Our Southern Highlanders and the classic outdoors guide Camping and Woodcraft. He wrote hundreds of articles during his lifetime and became an authority on the subject before passing away from an automobile accident in 1931. Kephart had specific preferences in his gear. Among his items was a knife of his own design made by Colclesser Bros. of Pennsylvania. At the time, it was made commercially and sold for $2 each. Only a few originals are known to still exist. This custom knife from Heavin Forge pays excellent homage to this famous knife.
The blade is hand forged 5160 carbon steel with an antiqued finish. 5160 carbon steel is tough, chip resistant, and maintains a razor sharp edge. It is an excellent choice for hard use knives. A convex edge provides a tougher, more chip resistant cutting edge. We recommend using camellia oil to protect the blade and natural wood handle.
Cocobolo handle scales sourced from Costa Rica are set on the full tang using brass pins. The scales were hand carved – using the method the original knives were made. A lanyard can be added to the rear of the knife for extra retention. While the contoured handle may look simple at first, you will quickly find it is comfortable in almost every grip possible.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand stitched pouch style leather sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
