Description: Gary Rodewald is an exceptional knifemaker and this is a tremendous example of his work. Though this knife will be a high performing knife, it would be equally at home in any collection. From the clean design and excellent ergonomics, to the high fit and finish, this knife is sure to be your favorite companion while out in the field.
Horace Kephart is considered by many to be the Godfather of American woodcraft and is best known as the author of Our Southern Highlanders and the classic outdoors guide Camping and Woodcraft. He wrote hundreds of articles during his lifetime and became an authoritative figure on the subject before passing away from an automobile accident in 1931. Kephart had specific preferences in his gear. Among his items was a knife of his own design made by Colclesser Bros. of Pennsylvania. At the time, it was made commercially and sold for $2 each. Only a few originals are known to still exist. This custom knife from Rodewald pays an excellent homage to this famous knife.
The drop point blade is forged from Gary's own 240 layer damascus, combining 1080 and 15N20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The blade is flat ground and razor sharp. Gary's touchmark is on the left side of the blade. Because the blade is forged from carbon steel, we recommend using camellia oil to protect the blade and ancient bone handle.
The hand scales are ancient stabilized woolly mammoth jaw bone, set on the full tang for strength and durability. The scales are hand contoured to fill your hand and provide a comfortable grip. The distal tapered blade and tang provide perfect balance. Black G-10 liners are excellent contrast to the jaw bone scales.
To keep the knife close at hand, a hand stitched leather custom sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
