Description: Dan Westlind, located in Wahkiakum Co. in Washington State, began making knives back in the 80's. He got his start by taking old knives with broken handles and replacing them. Eventually he began making his own blades. He became interested in damascus blades after reading about Japanese swordsmiths making damascus steel for the old Samurai swords. Today he has dedicated collectors, among them is his good friend Howard Leese, a guitarist for the band Heart. He also made a name for himself creating replicas for a knife used in the Lewis and Clark Expedition that is currently stored at Fort Clatsop. Dan took photos of the knife and made his first replica. He later met with Gale Norton who was the Secretary of the Interior at the time and she requisitioned more replicas that would be fully licensed to the National Parks Service and given a serial number. There is now one at Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello and another in St. Paul. According to Westlind, the governors of Washington, Idaho and Oregon also received one. Today, Dan still occasionally makes knives, but he has branched out to include making steampunk and industrial age art. This large bowie knife was kept in a private collection since it was made. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances, Dan could have made it yesterday!
The massive 11 inch blade was forged from Dan's own damascus, combining 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The Turkish Twist multi-bar damascus combines four separate twist damascus bars forge-welded together. The blade is flat ground and razor sharp. Dan's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle is a huge warthog tusk brought to a high polish. The massive tusk fills your hand nicely. A damascus S-guard, end cap, and finial finish the handle. The end cap is carved to match the natural shape of the dramatic tusk.
Excellent work throughout!
