Description: Johan Hendrik De Wet resides in Honeydew, Gauteng, South Africa and focuses on making quality fixed blades intended to be used. As a young boy, Johan's father was good friends with renowned knifemaker Rob Brown. Brown's knives left a lasting impression on Johan, inspiring him to make his own knives. After a visit with fellow South African bladesmith Neels van den Berg in 2017, Johan began his journey. He joined the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern Africa in 2019 and is also a member of the Southern African Bladesmiths Association. Johan's knives feature classic designs with great ergonomics.
The drop point blade is hand ground M390 stainless steel, a super-steel created by Bohler in Austria. M390 takes an incredibly sharp edge and holds on to it due to its high concentration of vanadium and chromium carbides. The unique powdered metallurgical process also promotes a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties, making M390 a popular steel used in surgical cutting instruments and in applications requiring a high finish. It offers excellent corrosion resistance due to its high concentration of chromium. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge. Johan's touchmark is on the left side of the blade.
Handle scales are wild African olive wood (Olea europeae sub sp. Africana). Wild olive wood is a hard, dense timber and is tremendously resilient -- exactly what we would hope for in a knife handle. The buttery yellow wood has a nice mix of light and dark tones. The scales meet seamlessly with black G-10 bolsters. Green fiber liners add a nice touch of contrast to the black G-10 and light toned wood scales. A lanyard can be added for extra retention using the lined lanyard hole in the handle.
To keep the knife close at hand, a pouch style leather sheath is included.
Excellent work throughout!
