Description: Phil Baldwin was an accomplished bladesmith and blacksmith out of Washington State, living in the Puget Sound area since 1983. He conducted numerous workshops around the nation at leading craft schools: Penland, Oregon School of Arts and Crafts, Arrowmont School of Crafts, Alfred University and at prominent national and regional conferences: ABANA, SNAG, New England Blademakers’ Guild, and the Northwest Blacksmith Association. He was arguably most known for his accomplishments with mokume-gane as a result of his participation in a two-year research project on the Japanese precious metal patterning process. At his graduate school, Southern Illinois University - Carbondale, Baldwin is known as an authority on the topic, as well as recognized as a producer of the exotic laminated metals for other artists through his company, Shining Wave Metals founded in 1983. Unfortunately, Phil passed away in August of 2023. This Damascus Tomahawk was kept in a private collection since it was made it. The axe is in near mint condition. There are a couple of exceptionally small, hard to see scuffs in the heat colored damascus and a few small dings in the handle common to see with tomahawks.
The head is heat colored damascus forged from carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The head measures approximately 7-1/2 inches from cutting edge to the back of the hammer. The cutting edge is approximately 3-1/3 inches long. The top and bottom of the axe are hand fileworked. A solid steel cap is welded to the back of the hammer to provide a stronger striking surface.
The handle is rosewood sculpted to provide a comfortable grip. The end cap is damascus with polished sides. A lanyard can be added to the bottom of the handle for extra retention in hand.
A hand stitched leather sheath is included to protect the axe when not in use.
Excellent work throughout!
