Description: Stuart Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quite his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching knifemaking classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became an ABS journeyman smith in June of 2019.
Stuart hand forged this 16-1/2 inch majestic bowie blade from his own damascus. It is high contrast, extremely detailed, and shows tremendous skill at the forge. The ladder pattern is extremelly tight and well controlled. By forging from carbon steels, Smith ensures excellent edge holding. A wide fuller traveels the length of the blade. Photos do not do this blade justice. The shear proportions are unbelievable!
The handle is sculpted stabilized curly walnut, which nicely reflects the ladder pattern damascus in the blade. The mild steel D-guard is hammer textured and blackened. It culminates in a clamshell quillion. The top of the handle features blackened mild steel spacers surrounding a polished and domed nickel silver spacer, which in turn reflects carving at the top and bottom of the handle. A coined spacer at the base of the handle is an elegant touch.
This knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather sheath by Michelle Smith. The sheath combines wildebeest hide and cowhide.
Absolutely exceptional!
