Description: Rucus Coetzee began making knives in 2010, when he started working at Heavin Forge under ABS Mastersmiths Kevin Harvey and Heather Harvey. He began forging blades immediately and joined the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern African in September of 2011 (making him -- at the age of 20 -- the youngest member -- an honor previously held by Mastersmith Kevin Harvey). In 2013, he started his own workshop and began creating many different styles of knives and blades from hunting knives to kitchen knives, though Rucus' interest in bladesmithing comes from his love for history and historical weapons. He spends a lot of time researching these weapons, then creates one of his own. They are never 100% copies of originals. Instead, he tries to introduce his own style into the historically-inspired piece.
The 8-1/2 inch blade was hand forged from 1075 carbon steel, which ensures excellent toughness and edge holding. Coetzee borrowed a heat treatment technique from the world of Japanese swords. Prior to quenching, the spine was coated in clay. This insulates the spine during quench, resulting in a soft, supportive spine with a keen, hard cutting edge. The undulating line travelling across the antiqued blade is called a hamon.
The handle is dyed and stabilized maple burl, secured to the tang using a hand domed bronze pin. The contoured handle fills your hand and provides a comfortable grip. Bronze spacers surround a central fluted spacer. The handle is finished with a blued mild steel guard.
To keep the knife close at hand, a tooled custom leather sheath with a bead matching the handle is included.
Excellent work throughout!
