Description: Stuart Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quite his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching knifemaking classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became an ABS journeyman smith in June of 2019. This is among Stuart's most impressive knives to date!
Stuart hand forged this massive 14 inch bowie blade from his own W's pattern damascus, combining 1090 and 15N20 carbon steels. It is high contrast, extremely detailed, and shows tremendous skill at the forge. The spine features a long clip that stops just short of fully sharpened and can be easily sharpened if desired. By forging from carbon steels, Smith ensures excellent edge holding. A hollow ground fuller runs almost the entire length of the blade.
The handle is stabilized black walnut, sculpted to provide a comfortable grip. Fittings throughout are blacked steel that has been engraved and inlaid with fine silver by Tiaan Burger. The clamshell at the hilt of the bowie is used to protect the hand and knuckles when parrying an incoming attack. Coined silver spacers surround the blackened steel fittings. The handle is finished with a blackened steel end cap inlaid with silver balls and a polished steel finial.
This knife is accompanied by a hand stitched leather custom sheath with ostrich shin leather inlay --performed with exquisite attention to detail, by Stuart's wife Michelle.
Excellent work throughout!
