Description: This puukko was hand made by Finnish blacksmith Veikko Hakkarainen. Veikko is a fourth generation blacksmith living and working in Tapio, a small locality north of Rovaniemi. Unfortunately, I have heard that Hakkarainen is no longer making knives today. This knife has been in a private collection and is in excellent condition. It does not show evidence of sharpening or wear.
The blade is hand forged W-Nr 1.1750 carbon steel (similar to 1075 carbon steel). The top is forge finished and polished, showing off the many hammer blows. The grinds are satin finished. The Scandi-grind is preferred by many bushcrafters for its efficient wood cutting.
The tear-drop shaped handle is compressed bark washers, compressed between two brass bolsters. As usual with birch bark handles, it has a plush, smooth feeling, while remaining grippy. Birch bark is virutally waterproof and provides a firm grip - even with wet handles.
The traditional Noric sheath features a single seam along the back and a swivel loop. The knife is also accompanied by a wood presentation box.
