Description: The exceptional Kukri is the work of Washington Mastersmith Michael Rader. Michael specializes in high performance kitchen knives and edged weapons from around the world. The Kukri, which was used in battle and the hunt by the Gurka people was worn proudly. They honor it as a special weapon which contains a spirit of its own. This knife was kept in a private collection since it was made. It is in brand new condition and by all appearances Michael could have made it yesterday!
The large 10-3/4 inch blade is hand forged W2 carbon steel and was heat treated using a traditional Japanese clay zone heat treatment. This technique, known as honyaki, produces some of the longest lasting edges found anywhere. The ultra-hard edge steel is supported by the softer spine. The dramatic heat treatment line (called a hamon) shows the transition between the softer and ultra-hard steel. By forging the blade within a very limited temperature range, Michael was able to create a damascene pattern in the mono-steel blade. Michael's mark is on the left side of the blade and his M.S. mark is on the right side.
The handle elegantly combines maple burl and box elder burl. The woods complement each other exceptionally. The handle is nicely contoured to provide a comfortable grip. A large mokume-gane ferrule finishes the handle. This is a knife you have to pick up to truly appreciate!
A custom wood stand with an exhibition grade spalted oak top made by Michael is included to display the knife.
Exceptional work throughout!
