Description: Rucus Coetzee began making knives in 2010, when he started working at Heavin Forge under ABS Mastersmiths Kevin Harvey and Heather Harvey. He began forging blades immediately and joined the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern African in September of 2011 (making him -- at the age of 20 -- the youngest member -- an honor previously held by Mastersmith Kevin Harvey). In 2013, he started his own workshop and began creating many different styles of knives and blades from hunting knives to kitchen knives, though Rucus' interest in bladesmithing comes from his love for history and historical weapons. He spends a lot of time researching these weapons, then creates one of his own. They are never 100% copies of originals. Instead, he tries to introduce his own style into the historically inspired piece.
This Cutlass is inspired by naval cutlass swords made in the 1700s. The 23-3/4 inch blade is hand forged 5160 carbon steel and features a long fuller typical of this type of sword. The blade was tempered to provide plenty of spring into the blade. A distal taper gives the blade a nice even flex and a lightweight tip. A gun blued finish provides an heirloom quality to the blade.
The handle is a beautiful section of black and gold dyed, stabilized maple burl. It was fluted and inlaid with antiqued twisted brass wire. The handle fills your hand nicely and feels exceptional in hand! The guard, pommel, and spacer are all made from brass that was polished and antiqued.
To protect the sword during transportation a scabbard made from felt lined maple, wrapped in leather is included. The fittings are matching antiqued brass.
Exceptional work throughout!
