Description: South African knifemakers André Thorburn and André van Heerden create exceptional folders. When they work together, they create A2 knives.
The A10 Front Flipper is inspired by the Thiers design from France. It is a design that the Andres have been working on and refining for over a year. This front flipper is elegantly simple, yet extremely comfortable and functional. It is among the easiest front flippers to use that I've ever tried.
The blade is perfectly centered with silky-smooth, drop-shut action -- easily opened with one hand using the discreet and ambidextrous front flipper toggle. It runs on an IKBS (Ikoma Korth Bearing System) pivot. This mechanism, which was originally designed to fit balisong knives, uses ball bearings to create exceptional action with no blade play. Thorburn and van Heerden created this special A10 Front Flipper with ceramic ball bearings. Generally IKBS bearings are made either from tool steel or from stainless steel. Stainless steel can wear away, resulting in uneven action over time. Tool steel bearings can oxidize making the action rough. Ceramic bearings are the best of all worlds. Extremely hard and wear resistant, they are also inert and will not oxidize. The inobtrusive front flipper tab is easy to use and won't get caught on things in your pocket.
The blade is hand ground stainless damascus forged by Damasteel in Sweden. This high performing damascus is created using powder metallurgical steel manufacturing to provide excellent edge retention and unmatched beauty. The pattern is revealed in the grinds. The flats are mirror polished nearly hiding the pattern. The blade is hollow ground for an easy to maintain edge.
Handle scales are satin finish titanium with complex carbon fiber inlays creating the appearance of integral front and rear bolsters. Titanium liners are bronze anodized and surround a carbon fiber backspacer. The external pivot and pivot collars are heat colored zirconium. The 3D machined zirconium pocket clip is mounted for right-side, tip-up carry.
Excellent work throughout!
