Description: De Wet van Zyl is a bladesmith from Durban, South Africa. He started making knives in 2005 and went full time in 2009 when he opened Darkwing Blades. He spent two years apprenticing with Mastersmiths Kevin and Heather Harvey at Heavin Forge, their prestigious bladesmithing school in South Africa. He was named as a ""Maker to Watch"" by Blade Magazine and has won numerous awards from knife shows hosted in South Africa. His work is exceptional and we are excited to promote his work on BladeGallery!
The 8 inch clip point blade is De Wet's own multi-bar composite damascus showing his tremendous skill at the forge. O1 tool steel makes up the cutting edge, providing excellent edge holding and chip resistance. The central bar of mosaic damascus is forged from EN45 carbon steel and nickel providing a bright, high contrast pattern. EN45 is commonly used in high performance swords due to its flexibility and shock resistance. The spine is EN9 carbon steel which provides the high tensile strength and resilience needed for a hard use knife. Lines of ferronickel (35% nickel and 65% iron) surround the central bar of mosaic damascus. A cracked ice appearance was brought out in the ferronickel during the etching process. The blade is spectacular and is a tremendous example of skilled forging. De Wet's mark is on the left side of the blade.
The handle is dyed, stabilized maple burl, hand contoured to provide a comfortable, ambidextrous grip. Alternating steel and brass spacers will help the natural wood handle adjust to humidity and temperature changes. A brass clamshell S-guard and fluted end cap finish the knife.
A custom leather sheath with a polished brass throat and tip is included.
This exceptional knife could easily be the centerpiece of any knife collection!
