Description: Mastersmith Kevin Harvey teaches bladesmithing courses, with students travelling from all over the world to learn his techniques. Kevin uses the Heavin Forge mark on his knives when he creates a knife while demonstrating for his classes. This is one such knife.
The 6-3/4 inch clip point blade was hand forged from 1070 carbon steel. It was forged closely to shape, ensuring a keen, long lasting edge. The blade was heat treated using a technique borrowed from Japanese swords. The spine was coated with clay prior to quenching. This results in a soft, supportive spine and keen, long lasting cutting edge. The undulating heat treatment line is called a gunome hamon.
The handle is made from rooibos wood(Aspalathus linearis). This dark wood has a swirling figure and is completed with a central mosaic pin and a brass lined lanyard tube. The contoured handle is fit perfectly to the brass guard. Alternating thin white fiber and brass spacers assist the handle to adjust to temperature and humidity changes.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched, basketweave tooled cowhide sheath.
