Description: Each time knives arrive from South African Stuart Smith, I'm always excited to see what he has created. Stuart is a powerhouse and is among the best bladesmiths forging knives in South Africa today. His designs as well as fit and finish are truly exceptional. Smith began making knives in 2000 after he took a class with Mastersmith Kevin Harvey. Stuart was immediately hooked and quit his job working as a salesman by 2004. Only a few years after that, in 2009, Stuart began teaching classes of his own. Among his many students is Neels van den Berg. Stuart has been very active over the years in the Southern African Bladesmiths Association (SABA) and the Knifemakers Guild of Southern Africa (KGSA). Stuart became an American Bladesmith Society Journeyman Smith in June 2019.
The large 16 inch clip point blade on this Cavalry Bowie is hand forged from 52100 carbon steel. This high performing steel is considered to be among the best steels (if not the very best) by many knifemakers and knife users. Makers such as Mastersmiths Bill Burke, Bob Kramer, and Ed Fowler have pioneered this long edge holding steel. A hand rubbed satin finish adds an heirloom feel to the blade. Stuart's JS mark is on the left side of the blade and his maker's mark is on the right side.
The handle is red bushwillow (Combretum apiculatum). Red bushwillow is native to the mesic to semi-arid savanna regions of Africa, southwards of the equator. The dramatic wood has a nice mix of warm, dark tones with a curled figure. The large oval handle fills the hand nicely and provides a comfortable grip. A large D shaped guard is forged from wrought iron. The antique wrought iron has a damascene pattern. Large bronze spacers and a bronze pomel nut complete the handle.
To protect the knife during transportation, a black leather sheath with a belt loop is included.
This is an exceptional knife with a tremendous presence! It is sure to be a highlight of most any collection.
