Description: Mastersmith Bill Burke's knives are as high performance as a hunter can get -- the sort of knife that if you were stuck out in the woods or on a desert island and only had one tool, this would be it. This prototype of Bill's full tang Sheep Horn Hunter has been in a private collection since it was made. The knife has never been used or carried. By all appearances, Mastersmith Burke could have made it yesterday. This is the second prototype Burke made of the Full Tang Sheep Horn Hunter. The left ricasso has Burke's maker's mark and "Proto2".
Burke tests his knives for edge flex and cutting ability before assembly. The heat treatment is a highly detailed process that was developed between Mastersmith Ed Fowler and Bill Burke after years of trial and experimentation. This technique, involving low temperature forging, triple quenching and triple tempering creates some of the sharpest and most long lasting edges found anywhere. A differential heat treatment results in a blade with a soft, supportive spine and a keen, long lasting edge. Bill's mark is on the left side of the blade. The blade measures 3-1/4 inches.
The handle combines sheep horn with a brass guard. The guard protects your fingers from moving onto the blade's edge and brings the weight to the center of the knife. The distal tapered spine and full tang reduce weight and provide excellent balance in hand. Sheep horn scales are set on the full tang using hidden bolt rivets. When wet, sheep horn does not become slippery, and it is amazingly durable. This is an extremely comfortable handle -- you'll have a hard time putting it down.
This hunter is accompanied by a sturdy, 2.5 oz. waxed leather pouch style sheath.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
