Description: This competition chopper was made by Michael Rader while he was a journeyman smith. It has been in a private collection and is in new condition. It has never been used to cut and by all appearances could have been made yesterday. This chopper actually won an award in the cutting competition and the medal accompanies the knife.
The thick cleaver style blade is hand forged from Michael's own carbon damascus to provide the toughness and edge retention needed for heavy duty tasks. A thick spine moves into a thicker convex belly providing easy forward momentum for chopping tasks. A hole has been drilled so you can add a lanyard for extra retention in hand -- an important safety feature.
Michael forged this competition chopper with an integral guard. Integral guards put a maker's skill to the test. Hand forging an integral guard is extremely difficult in a custom environment. It clearly show's Rader's skill at the forge.
The handle is made from a horse stable mat - a material well known for its shock absorbing capabilities. It was then coated in a rough textured, non-slip coating to give a safe and reliable grip regardless of weather conditions.
This competition chopper is perfect for replacing that large axe to lighten your load while working out in the field!
