Description: This very rare Silver Spike was made by renowned Northwest knifemaker Rod Chappel and completed October 12th, 1998. It has been in a private collection and has been well cared for. It has never been used and is in virtually new condition. Rod Chappel is an Alaskan Native American knifemaker and created knives of tremendous distinction.
The blade was made from T440V stainless steel. This rare powdered metallurgical stainless steel was introduced in 1995 and is now discontinued. T440V was based on 440C (which Chappel was well known for using), but had additional carbon (2.15%) and vanadium (5.5%). It is highly wear and stain resistant with a high carbide volume with small carbides. It takes a nice, long lasting edge.
The 5-1/2 inch blade is made from 1/3 inch thick stock. The primary side features a deep hollow dagger grind. The reverse is a single deep hollow grind, resulting in a broad triangular blade. It is scalpel-sharp, needle-pointed and a very lethal....and messy....weapon. The central hollow is inscribed "Roderick Caribou Chappel …. / Silver Spike Custom made for / Steven Dartel, my good friend …… / SER no. 1 of 1". The ricasso is marked "Edmunds, Wa / October 12th, 1998 / S.S.T-440V".
The handle combines rosewood surrounded by brass, stainless steel, and aluminum into an elegant, flowing shape. Rod's understanding of handle design really comes through on this elegant Silver Spike. The handle is tremendously comfortable. It is a knife you won't want to put down.
Excellent work throughout from one of the great makers in the custom knife industry!
