Description: Certain knives have defined the potential of modern handmade knives. This collaboration between Steve Hoel and Steve Lindsay is one such knife. It was featured on the cover of the Feb. 1999 issue of Knives Illustrated. A copy of Knives Illustrated is included with the knife. This folder has been in a single collection and is in mint condition. By all appearances it could have been made yesterday. Both makers have told me that they consider this knife to be among their masterworks, if not the best knife they have ever made.
The superlative, small Sheffield style folder was created by master knife maker Steve Hoel. The blade steel is stainless damascus forged by another master knife maker, Fritz Schneider of Germany. The blade is perfectly centered and has smooth action with a firm lockup.
The frame is formed from 416 stainless steel. Steve Lindsay engraved the knife about its full circumference prior to embellishing the sides. The handle inlay is gold tiger eye stone, a clever complement to the overall theme of the work. The engraving is astonishingly life-like. The figure of the noble tiger is realized through a well placed series of tiny dots similar to the technique of the pointillists. This technique is called bulino. The relief engraved scroll work (bank note line engraving) which accompanied the tiger is accented with 24kt gold inlay.
The knife is a brilliant testament to the combined efforts of three fine artisans. Absolutely magnificent!
