Description: This knife was made by Mastersmith Andrew Meers. Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. He is currently the resident artist at Appalachian Center for Craft.
This chef's knife is likely to become the primary knife used in your kitchen. The sleek blade provides finger clearance while being extremely dexterous. The nicely arced blade has a perfect shape for an efficient rocking chop. Whether chopping onions, mincing garlic, or slicing meats, this knife will be a perfect choice.
Andrew hand forged the laddered Ws damascus to shape beginning with 1084 and 15N20 carbon steels. This ensures a keen long lasting edge as well as exceptional beauty! The undulating pattern is immediately captivating. The blade and bolster are made from one solid piece of damascus. Though integral knives are regularly done in production work, creating an integral bolster in a custom setting is extremely difficult and shows the maker's skill at its best.
the right side of the bolster is inlaid with mokume gane that Andrew forged from kuromido, shibuichi, and shakudo. Kuromido is an alloy of 99% copper and 1% metallic arsenic. Shibuichi (meaning "one-fourth" in Japanese) is a formulation of one part silver to three parts copper. Shakudo is combines approximately 4-10% gold and 90-96% copper. The resulting inlay is extremely elegant and brings out warm notes in the wood. The mokume was the engraved to depict two detailed sage leaves.
Meers formed the elegantly contoured handle from African blackwood. The workmanship is beautiful, with the dark toned wood showing off his carving perfectly. It is entirely captivating! Contours ensure a comfortable and safe grip. A polished stainless steel spacer and pin provide a nice contrast.
A gorgeous piece built for serious use, yet one of the more dramatic kitchen knives that I have come across.
