Description: Jonny Walker Nilsson is one the true masters of the Sami styled knife. His work has been recognized for its innovations while working within this very traditional medium. Mattias Styrefors is one of the true masters of damascus steel. Since 2006, Jonny and Mattias, long time friends, began working together and sharing their arts. The results are exceptional!
The damascus blade was forged to shape by Mattias. It uses the san mai technique -- a central core of heat colored firecracker pattern damascus is surrounded by alternating layers of nickel and matching damascus. The combination of patterns and textures is quite captivating.
The stacked handle begins with a section of presentation grade box elder burl. The box elder moves into a section of mammoth ivory. The mammoth ivory is engraved in a traditional Sami motif (the pattern is not scrimshaw, it is hand engraving darkened with pine bark powder) by Jonny. Jonny's work is particularly detailed and shows his skill at its best. The handle is completed with buffalo horn, a nickel silver spacer, and a cross-cut section of ancient walrus ivory.
The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled traditional Swedish leather sheath. Reindeer antler is engraved in traditional Sami patterns and inlaid into the sheath. A buffalo horn inlay separates the two sections of reindeer antler for excellent contrast. Exceptional work throughout!
