Description: Fred Ott's work is always exceptional -- showing off his tremendous sense of design and skill in implementation. This Trailing Point Fighter shows off his work and design skills at its best! Ott made this knife in 2015. It has been in a private collection since then and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, Fred could have made it yesterday.
The upswept blade is Fred's own damascus. He combined three separate bars --- all forged from 1080, L6 and 15N20 carbon steels -- into a complex and captivating blade. Drawing influence from Japanese knives, a habaki (blade guard) forms the transition between the damascus guard and blade. The habaki is fileworked and textured nickel silver.
The handle is meticulously hand fluted, showing off the polished presentation grade ironwood at its best. Light toned Steller's sea cow bone spacers surround the ironwood and provide excellent contrast. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct. The contoured handle is extremely comfortable.
Fred built this knife with take-down construction. This ensures that the knife can be disassembled for thorough cleaning and repairs.
The knife is accompanied by a basswood sheath wrapped in buffalo leather.
An exceptional addition to any collection!
