Description: Andrew Meers is a talented knifemaker originally from Boston, where he studied under Mastersmith JD Smith. A graduate of Southern Illinois University Carbondale, he is now the artist in residence at Appalachian Center for Crafts. Given the skill shown in this enticing utility knife, he is clearly on my list of makers to watch!
The long, slender damascus blade is a four bar composite forged to shape from 1095 and L6 carbon steels. The resulting pattern is intricate, and highly detailed. It shows both his skills at the grinder and at the forge. The steel clearly shows the influence of Mastersmith JD Smith, who is well known for his skills at creating damascus.
Creating knives with integral bolsters is one of the biggest challenges facing a maker. Here, Meers has shown his skill at its best. The pattern shows close forging to shape. Both the blade and tang are distal tapered for optimal balance. The tang is hand fileworked all the way around.
Wenge scales are heirloom fit the tang and integral bolster, ensuing a perfect fit across time. The dark wood has linear light and dark striations that are a nice complement to the steel.
The knife is accompanied by a hand tooled custom leather sheath.
Exceptional work throughout!
