Description: Tom Sterling is well known for his knapped steel knives. Here, he has combined his love of the forged blade with his knapped style.
The Knapped Steel Petroglyph Dagger features a blade hand forged from 1084 carbon steel. The steel was then carved and hot blued to resemble a knapped stone knife. Small striations within each concave "valley" are just some of the indications of the attention to detail Tom applies. To carve this out of steel, as compared to stone, has its own challenges and time requirements. As with his stone knives, the blade is affixed in the handle using rawhide wrapping.
The handle is carved from antiqued moose antler, showing off Tom's carving skills earned from years of working as a netsuke artist. The material Tom uses here was naturally shed. One side shows petroglyphs, art inscribed into materials as in the fashion found by early Native Americans and other indigenous peoples. Depictions of a mammoth hunt adorn the handle, complete with several hunters (including one fallen hunter), spears, trees, and sun.
This dagger is accompanied by a custom walnut presentation box that hinges and can be used as a vertical stand. A very unique and beautiful piece.
Exceptional work throughout!
