Description: This is a beautiful example of Tom's "knapped steel" style. Tom has produced a unique synthesis of two ancient arts - knifemaking and sculpture. This creation has a stunning amount of detail, beginning with the steel blade of the shark tooth shaped push dagger. The carbon steel is carved and engraved to resemble a flint knapped knife, complete with percussion marks. By hot bluing the steel, Tom gives it an obsidian-like appearance.
Engraved stainless steel scales surround the carbon steel tang. The engraving depicts Tom's impressions of the Samish tribe's Legend of the Maiden of Deception Pass. The left scale portrays the Maiden of Deception Pass. Her hair flows through water. Her fingers have grown webbing and her legs have formed into a tail. A Pacific salmon and a starfish are shown in the background. The right scale portrays an octopus grasping at a salmon skeleton and a squid. The engraving is meticulous and is influenced by Northwest Native American art. Deception pass is one of the most beautiful scenic vistas in the world, and is located a short drive away from Tom's home in Washington State. It is the home of the world's largest Pacific octopus.
This push dagger is accompanied by an elk antler and rosewood display stand. True to form, this piece is a fascinating fusion of ancient cultures - with a touch of the whimsy we expect from Tom!
