Description: Showing the influence of Japanese swords on his work, after forging the blade from 1086M carbon steel, Fred Ott clay hardened the blade. This technique results in a soft, supportive spine, with a hard edge -- a perfect combination of sharpness and brawn. The border between hard and soft steel is the repetitive, gently undulating pattern known in Japan as gunome.
The handle is formed from a single piece of thuya burl, incorporating warm, mid tones with lighter undulating wood grain. A steller's sea cow bone spacer is surrounded by antiqued bronze. Steller's sea cow (Hydrodamalis gigas) is an extinct, large sirenian mammal formerly found near the Asiatic coast of the Bering Sea. It was discovered in the Commander Islands in 1741 by the German naturalist Georg Steller, who was traveling with the explorer Vitus Bering. Through an unfortunate combination of being slow, large, and very good tasting, by 1768, less than 30 years after it had been discovered, Steller's sea cow was extinct.
The knife is accompanied by a Nordic single seamed leather sheath.
Excellent fit and finish throughout with a great feel in the hand.
