Description: This Swedish Puukko was made by Staffan Pantzar in the fall of 2007. It has been in a single private collection and has been meticulously cared for. By all appearances, it could have been made yesterday.
Staffan Pantzar began knifemaking in 1990 and was Vice Chairman of the Swedish Knifemakers Association for quite a number of years (beginning in 2002). His specialty was Swedish styled hunting and fishing knives. As is typical in Sweden, Pantzar teamed up with well known bladesmiths, who forged the blades and then Staffan created the handles and sheaths. This allows both artists to specialize in the areas of knifemaking that they both enjoy the most and are best at.
The multi-bar composite damascus blade was forged by renowned Swedish bladesmith Mattias Styrefors. A bold, linear pattern damascus bar forms the center of the blade. This was then surrounded by a firecracker pattern edge and spine forged from 20C and 15N20 carbon steels.
The stacked handle incorporates a side cut fossil mammoth ivory "bolster". By cutting the ivory in this way, Staffan is able to retain the bark texture on the front face and show the natural, dramatic grain pattern on the sides. A spacer formed from buffalo horn has excellent contrast. The remainder of the handle is dyed and stabilized masur birch wood. The figure is particularly dramatic. The handle has been well contoured for a comfortable, secure hold.
The knife is accompanied by a hand stitched, single seamed traditional Nordic leather sheath.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
