Description: This fancy Nessmuk knife by Raymond Richard has an ageless sense of grace that is rarely found in knives.
Explorer George Washington Sears, who was born in 1821, lived with Nipmuc Indians and learned skills of wilderness living. He is best known for his writings under the pen name of "Nessmuk", which dated from 1880 - 1890. During this time, he developed the knife pattern which would later bear his name. This pattern is believed by many woodsman to be the perfect knife, even today. The deep belly allows it to be an excellent skinning knife, with the weight brought toward the tip.
The blade was forged to shape from carbon steel recovered from a drag saw blade. Drag saws were used before the advent of the chain saw and had very strong, resilient blades. A differential heat treatment assures that the spine is soft and resilient, whereas the edge is hard and will maintain a keen edge.
The wrought iron for the guard was recovered from an 1800's wagon wheel. The wrought iron for the pommel and loop came from 1800s era anchor chain. Sambar stag forms the handle -- resulting in a very secure hand hold. Sambar of this quality is now quite rare.
Excellent fit and finish throughout.
