Description: Coming back from the Blade show with journeyman smith test knives is one of my great highlights of the year. Five knives were made by each applicant that are the height of their work. These knives were judged by ABS Mastersmiths on fit and finish, as well as general artistry. The standards are exacting. The knives that a prospective Journeyman puts forward for testing are among the masterpieces of their career -- knowing that masters will be examining their work, the maker often puts many times the attention and time than they would generally do for their knives. This Desert Ironwood Bowie was one of the five knives that Henry selected as the best of his work for judging by the masters. As you would expect, Henry has paid attention to every detail.
The W2 carbon steel blade has been forged to shape and was given a meticulous hand satin finish. A differential heat treatment results in a strong, supportive spine with an ultra hard, long lasting cutting edge.
The oval guard and decorative habaki (blade guard) are formed from nickel silver, as are the spacers which surround fileworked, heat colored mild steel. The habaki brings in a Japanese influence which is carried through in the differential heat treatment. The stabilized desert ironwood burl handle is capped with a nickel silver pommel, sculpted spacer, and heat blued mild steel lanyard plug. Exceptional fit and finish throughout.
