Description: Mastersmith Kevin Harvey is well known for his tremendous attention to detail -- only matched by his skill at design. He is a knifemaker that many talented knifemakers look up to. Dead Man's Hand shows a culmination of Kevin's skills from the intricate damascus forging to his sole authorship hand engraving.
The clip point blade was hand forged from Kevin's own multi-bar damascus combining carbon steels to ensure excellent edge holding and chip resistance. A ladder pattern at the spine is combined with a twist pattern at the cutting edge. A nickel bar set between creates a transition point. The blade is flat ground and razor sharp. The top clip stops just short of fully sharpened. The spine is rounded for a comfortable thumb purchase. Kevin's touchmark is on the left side ricasso.
The coffin handle is skunkbush (Premna mooiensis). This deciduous tree is native to southern Africa. It has warm tones and a beautiful figure. A nickel silver escutcheon engraved with "Wild Bill" is inlaid into the right side.
Wild Bill Hickok (born James Butler Hickok in 1837) was a legendary figure of the American Old West—known as a lawman, gunslinger, gambler, and scout. He gained fame for his sharpshooting skills and his exploits as a U.S. Marshal and law enforcer in frontier towns like Abilene and Hays City, Kansas. Hickok also served as a Union scout during the Civil War and became a national folk hero through sensationalized newspaper stories. In 1876, while playing poker in Deadwood, South Dakota, he was shot in the back of the head by Jack McCall. At the time of his death, Hickok held the infamous “Dead Man’s Hand” — a pair of black aces and black eights.
This hand is hand engraved by Kevin into the top of the nickel silver butt plate. The bottom of the butt plate is engraved with a pair of dice that rolled snake eyes. A twist damascus oval guard and hand engraved nickel silver spacer finish the handle. This compact bowie is large enough to get the job done while remaining compact enough to carry for unfortunate situations.
To keep the knife close at hand, a leather sheath with a polished nickel silver tip and throat is included. The bronze frog button is hand engraved with a poker chip.
Excellent work throughout!
