Description: Rucus Coetzee began making knives in 2010 when he started working at Heavin Forge under ABS Mastersmiths Kevin Harvey and Heather Harvey. He began forging blades immediately and joined the Knifemakers' Guild of Southern African in September of 2011 (making him -- at the age of 20 -- the youngest member -- an honor previously held by Kevin Harvey). In 2013, he started his own workshop and began creating many different styles of knives and blades from hunting knives to kitchen knives, though Rucus' interest in bladesmithing comes from his love for history and historical weapons. He spends a lot of time researching these weapons, then creates one of his own. They are never 100% copies of originals. Instead, he tries to introduce his own style into the historically-inspired piece.
This Coffin Dagger shows Rucus' excellent skills at their best. The combination of materials and finishes provides a canvas that tells an age old story.
The blade is hand ground, hand forged 1075 carbon steel with an antiqued finish. 1075 carbon steel has an excellent combination of edge holding and toughness. The blade is ground with perfect symmetry. Coetzee's touchmark is on the ricasso.
The coffin style handle is dyed and stabilized maple burl secured to the hidden tang using copper pins. The contoured handle provides a comfortable grip. Copper spacers surround a blackened steel spacer. The copper spacers feature a traditional Japanese patina known as Hido. The copper is heated until right before its melting point and quenched to produce a very pleasing scarlet red patina. The handle is finished with a blackened steel guard.
A hand stitched leather custom sheath is included to protect the dagger when not in use.
Excellent work throughout!
