Description: Anders Hogstrom, who is well known for his exceptional fit and finish, created this pirate inspired cutlass about 10 years ago. It has been in a private collection and has been meticulously cared for. It is in mint condition and by all appearances, Anders could have made it yesterday.
The upswept clip point blade is 1050 carbon steel, ensuring excellent toughness. Anders borrowed a heat treatment technique from the world of Japanese swords. Prior to quenching, the spine was coated in clay. This insulates the spine during quench, resulting in a soft, supportive spine with a keen, hard cutting edge. The undulating line travelling across the antiqued blade is called a hamon. The top of the knife is ground just short of a fully sharpened cutting edge.
The handle is hand contoured from stabilized madrone burl secured to the tang using a hand domed bronze pin. The selection of wood is stunning, with an intricate swirling figure. Bronze fittings bring additional warmth into the handle and nicely complement the dyed and stabilized handle.
A leather sheath with a bronze frog accompanies the knife. The sheath is dyed to nicely match the tone of the convoluted wood.
Excellent work throughout!
